Modes are selections between multiplayer and single player, Online Racing (OR), and Mario Kart Online. Another name for online is MKDisc.
Single Player[]
In this mode, you can play alone. The Grand Prix mode allows you to unlock things, and so does Time Trials. The starter engineclasses are: 20cc, 50cc and 75cc. In Time Trials mode, there are lots and lots of challenges. You can unlock staff ghosts, see your records and unlock characters, and unlock vehicles. Save cards for Time Trials include: 1.699, 1.799, 1.499, and ISIOS.
Double Player[]
VS mode in MK8DX.
In this mode, you play with a partner. There is VS, battle, and Tournaments. In VS, you can choose either Solo or Team. In Battle, you will battle in teams. There are 4 types and 5 Teams:

7 Star Challenge
Survival (who gets the most ? Blocks win with many dangerous obstacles and without bumping them)
Coin Rush (timer 5 minutes, after beating the game you get 1 minute rush and ten minute rush. You must get the most coins in the timer. If you get 0 coins out of the timer, you will get kicked out of one cup)
Nimble Challenge (awarded by Adobe Flash, by playing Mario Kart Xtreme Online, and Nimble Challenge is only played in the 1.699 or 1.499 Version)
Triple Player[]
This mode allows 3 players to play together. The types and modes are the same, but one added feature is included. It is called the Triple Teams Tournament. There are 3 teams, 3 players and 3 cups in each. To get half a point, you must grab your opponents' flag, depending on the color their team is. To earn one whole point, grab another's cup for 1 minute.)
